Essential Security Group was approved for a grant towards a £60,000 project in November 2019, with TALE funding £24,000 of it.

They provide bespoke electronic fire, security and infrastructure solutions to both commercial and domestic properties throughout the UK. Stephen Smith, Director, wanted to create and employ two new roles and purchase a new logistics system to manage their fleet of vehicles across Essex and beyond.

By the time that Stephen was ready to implement his project, disaster had struck in the form of Covid-19 and lockdown. The business went into immediate survival mode as customers shut buildings and locked their doors to protect themselves, meaning he had to function at lower capacity. In addition, the supplier for the approved system that Stephen wanted to purchase also went out of business.

After Sian Dowell, his Business Support Facilitator, rang him to routinely check how the business was doing during lockdown, Stephen caught her up on what had happened. TALE is not only about improvement and growth, but business resilience. To help the resilience of the business, he wanted to find a new subscription-based system instead. As we were able to talk to Stephen about what he needed before he went ahead, we were able to do a grant variation – he was still fulfilling the project that he wanted to undertake and had approval for, but TALE was able to be flexible and accommodate a different plan to match the new direction of the business.

Stephen has now been able to take on the two new roles and has successfully implemented a new system. Stephen said “‘Sian and the TALE team were able to adjust the initial support package they offered us to focus on the immediate dangers that COVID 19 presented our business. As a result of TALE support, we were able to invest in staff and train them on our new software package to help prepare us for the new economy that we have found ourselves in. Without TALE, we were looking at making redundancies and downscaling our business. We are emerging from COVID with greater efficiencies than when we entered because of our new software package funded by TALE.
